New for the Society: Council Shadowing Scheme

Today, the Microbiology Society is pleased to announce the launch of our new Council Shadowing Scheme that will enable members to gain an insight into the inner workings of the Society. Applications for the scheme are now open.
Historically, the Society has received a low number of nominations for Council positions. One of the reasons for this could be that some members are unsure of the role of Council, and how it drives the work of the Society.
To address this, the Equality and Diversity Ambassadors suggested a shadowing scheme to demystify what is involved with being on Council. The scheme is now open for applications for members who would like to get more involved in the Society.
Members who are selected to take part in the shadowing scheme will be paired with a current member of Council who will share their experience, providing insight into their role on Council.
At the end of the pairing partnership, it is hoped that shadows will have an insight into the Society’s Council structure and be encouraged to nominate themselves when the next round of Society elections takes place.
Chair of the Equality and Diversity Ambassadors, and Council Member Professor Nicola Stonehouse said of the scheme: “Being on Council gives you the opportunity to contribute to decisions that shape the future of the Society. This scheme can be an excellent opportunity for members to gain insight into our strategic activities and become inspired to take the step to get more closely involved in our work.”

As the Microbiology Society is both a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, Council Members are legally responsible as Trustees of the Charity and Directors of the Company.
