Aims & Objectives

The Microbiology Society is an international membership organisation with legal jurisdiction and an operational base in the UK.

This strategy covers a five-year time-span (from 2012 to 2017), with a light-touch, rolling review at least every two years.

In 2014 Council decided to carry out a light touch review of the Society’s strategy which was approved in 2015.

The Society's Vision:


A world in which the science of microbiology provides maximum benefit to society.

The Society's Mission:


Advancing the understanding and impact of microbiology by connecting and empowering communities worldwide.

In refining the Strategy four strategic themes or ‘pillars of excellence’ have been identified. The strategic themes are broad in scope and each theme is an area in which the Society must excel in order to achieve its Vision and Mission. The four strategic themes are: International, Membership, Engagement and Knowledge Transfer, and Sustainability.

Strategic themes – pillars of excellence

The pillars provide a framework through which the Society’s strategic priorities can be delivered so that we achieve our goals.

  • International – shape the future of microbiology globally by delivering relevant activities and resources, and through strengthening strategic international partnerships.
  • Membership – enhance the membership experience so it not only meets but exceeds expectations and members feel valued, heard and part of a community.
  • Engagement and Knowledge Transfer – making the best use of the depth and wealth of knowledge in our diverse membership.
  • Sustainability – having the resources in place to enable the society to deliver its Mission.

Strategic priorities

To achieve its Vision and Mission, the Society will work towards the strategic priorities below. These are laid out in a logical sequence but this does not imply a hierarchy of importance or resource allocation.

  • Communications - raising awareness through public engagement: to inspire and educate people about microbiology, and allow them to make informed decisions which recognise the importance of microbiology and its advances.
  • Professional development: to promote microbiology as a career from school level onwards, and support career and professional development of microbiologists.
  • Scientific Conferences: to hold international scientific conferences to disseminate research knowledge and provide a forum for communication between microbiologists and to grow and support communities among them.
  • Publishing: to contribute to the science of microbiology through high-quality, sustainable, innovative publications, delivering a high level of value to the Society, its members and the global community of microbiologists.
  • Policy- informing policy development through research: to ensure that appropriate scientific information and expert opinion are made available to policy- and decision- makers, and that the improvement of resources and infrastructure for microbiology is supported.
