  • Professor John Gareth Morris: a tribute

    The Microbiology Society is saddened to report that Professor John Gareth Morris CBE DPhil FIBiol FLSW FRS, passed away aged 91 on December 2023 in Llandogo, Monmouthshire.

    Gareth joined the Microbiology Society – then the Society for General Microbiology in 1955 – and published the several papers from his PhD studies in the Journal of General Microbiology, as well as many later papers over the course of his career. He also served on the Editorial Board of JGM (1970-74) and also on the Society’s Council. In 1997, he was awarded Honorary Membership of the Society.

    The Microbiology Society Infection Science Award aims to support the exchange of ideas and the career development of promising early career and trainee researchers, helping to translate microbiological research to the clinic. The scheme facilitates selected presenters from the Federation of Infection Society (FIS) conference to present their work at Annual Conference.
    In this blog, meet one of this year’s awardees, Dr Eva Bernadett Benyei (PhD student at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge), who presented in the Infection Forum session at Annual Conference 2024 last week.
