The Microbiology Society’s Fleming Prize is awarded each year to an early career researcher who has achieved an outstanding research record within 12 years of being awarded their PhD.

To inspire you to nominate an outstanding researcher for the 2018 award, we’re looking back at one of our previous Fleming Prize winners.

In 2010, the Fleming Prize was awarded to Steve Diggle, an Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. Prior to moving to the US, Steve worked at the University of Nottingham, gaining his PhD in 2001, becoming a Royal Society University Research Fellow in 2006 and an Associate Professor in 2013.

Steve has made a great contribution to the field of sociomicrobiology, working to understand the cooperation, conflict and communication between microbes and the implications these have for the evolution of virulence. This research was demonstrated in his Prize Lecture, ‘Microbial communication and virulence: lessons from the evolutionary theory’, delivered at Annual Conference 2010.

Members are invited to nominate an individual who demonstrates an excellent research record. For more information about all our Prize Lectures please visit our website.
