Travel & Research

The Society offers schemes to support members to communicate their science at conferences, develop collaborations and experience research in different environments.

Eligible members of the Society can apply for a Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) Meeting Attendance Grant. Please see the FEMS Grants page for details.

Enquiries about these schemes should be made in writing to the Grants Office.

Applications should be submitted by email (grants@microbiologysociety.org), giving the grant name in the subject line.

  1. Undergraduate Student Conference Grants

    This grant has now been discontinued from 1 November 2016.

  2. Inclusion Grants

    This grant has now been discontinued from 1 November 2016.

  3. Travel Grants

    Funds are available to support eligible members presenting work at scientific or education meetings. Eligible members may also apply for funding to attend a short course or training event.

  4. Research Visit Grants

    The Society offers grants of up to £3,000 to support members who are planning a short (one- to three-month) research visit to another laboratory. This scheme supports innovative projects within established collaborations and the development of new collaborative initiatives.

  5. Harry Smith Vacation Studentships

    The Society offers a limited number of awards to enable undergraduates to work on microbiological research projects during the summer vacation. Applications must be made by the project supervisor on behalf of a named student.

  6. Sir Howard Dalton Young Microbiologist of the Year Competition

    The Microbiology Society awards a prize to a Member presenting a poster or offered paper at the Society's Annual Conference or Irish Division meeting.

  7. Hayes – Burnet Award and Heatley – Payne Award

    This grant has now been discontinued from 1 November 2016.

  8. Society Conference Grants

    Funds are available to eligible members to support their attendance at the Annual Conference or one other Society meeting per year.
