Early Career Microbiologists' Forum Event Fund

The Early Career Microbiologists' (ECM) Forum Executive Committee provides small grants to contribute to the costs of events organised by eligible ECM Forum members.

What is covered by the grant?

Up to £200 will be awarded to contribute to the expenses of the proposed activity.

A variety of activities will be considered for support, for example:

  • inviting a speaker to give a microbiological research seminar
  • hosting a symposium, workshop or short conference (which could be to disseminate research results and give students an opportunity to present work, or provide training in a specific technique or methodology or other professional development activity)
  • a careers advice session

Funds may be used towards the travel and accommodation expenses of a speaker, venue hire, dinner or other food (but not alcoholic beverages), promotional material and resources.

Terms and conditions

The activity to be supported must contain a microbiological component or be of relevance to microbiologists.

Awards are made at the discretion of the Society.

Retrospective applications will not be considered.

The activity must be advertised as 'Sponsored by the Microbiology Society' (a logo will be made available for this purpose) and promotional literature about the Society must be made available.

A brief report must be provided within three months of the activity.

All claims must be substantiated by receipts or copies of invoices or other documents as appropriate.

By accepting a grant, recipients give their approval for the Society to use this and related information in publicity and marketing communications.

Application process

There are two rounds of application per year. Closing dates are 31 March and 30 September.

Applications must be made on the form available on this page and submitted to the deadline at least one month in advance of the activity. Applications should be submitted by email, giving the grant name in the subject line.

Applicants must provide a detailed description of the proposed activity, full costings and evidence of any other sponsorship.

The Head of Department of the Institution must write in support of the activity, indicating whether resources will also be available from local sources.

Applicants should expect to receive notification of the outcome of their application within one month of the closing date applied. It is therefore expected that applications for the March and September rounds will be for activities taking place after 1 May and 1 November, respectively.

Administration of awards

Funds can be given to directly reimburse the speaker, or be claimed by the Institution within three months of the event.

The Grants Office will provide the Society logo and instruction on its use.

Promotional material to be made available at the activity will be sent two weeks in advance of the activity.
