Food Security and Safety

04/01/2012

Nearly one billion people worldwide go hungry every day, and with the population predicted to rise from its current 7 billion to 9 billion by 2050, producing sustainable supplies of safe nutritious foods with minimal impact on the environment and animal welfare is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind.

The Microbiology Society recognises that there will be no one solution to the global challenge of food security and it will require multidisciplinary and multinational teams to work effectively together. However, both now and in the future, microbiology research and development will play a profoundly important role in sustaining and improving food production, food safety and environmental quality while reducing waste.
